Chain link is the workhorse of commercial security fencing.
It is cost-effective, low-maintenance and keeps clear sight lines across a yard or lot.
But "chain link" covers a lot of choices. Here is what to decide before you ask for a bid.
1. Galvanized or Vinyl-Coated Fabric
This is the first choice on every commercial chain link job.
- Galvanized: the classic silver look. Common for industrial yards, warehouses and utility sites.
- Vinyl-coated: black or green. A cleaner look for public sites, parks, courts and storefront areas.
Coastal sites near the bay or the beach should talk through coatings and hardware at the site walk.
2. Height
Height is set by what you are protecting and by local rules.
We have built commercial chain link from 6 feet for yards and lots up to 12 feet for high-security sites.
Taller fence means bigger posts and more concrete, so height drives price more than almost anything else.
3. Security Toppings
A topping makes a fence harder to climb.
- Barbed wire on single or Y-style arms
- Razor wire where the spec calls for it
Rules on toppings differ by city and county. Check before you plan on one. Our Panama City fence permit guide is a good place to start.
4. Anti-Climb Options
For high-security sites, standard fabric may not be enough.
- Small-mesh fabric that is hard to get a grip on
- Welded anti-climb mesh panels
For vehicle threats, see crash-rated fencing.
5. Privacy Slats and Windscreen
Chain link is open by design. Sometimes you need to hide what's behind it.
Privacy slats or windscreen screen equipment, inventory and work areas from the street.
They work well around storage yards, dumpster areas and sports courts.
6. Gates
A security fence is only as strong as its gates.
- Walk gates for staff
- Double drive gates for trucks
- Cantilever and slide gates for wide openings and tight spaces
Many of our gates are steel-framed in our own shop. Add an operator, keypad or card reader with commercial gate operators and access control.
7. Temporary Fence During Construction
Building or renovating first? Temporary fence panels secure the site until the permanent fence goes in.
8. Keeping It in Shape
Chain link needs very little upkeep, but a quick check a few times a year helps.
- Walk the line and look for bent fabric or loose ties.
- Keep vines and brush off the fabric.
- Check gate hinges, latches and wheels, since gates take the most wear.
- Look at the bottom of the fence for gaps or washouts after heavy rain.

A: Yes. We install barbed wire on single or Y-style arms, and razor wire where the spec calls for it. Rules differ by city and county, so check before you plan on one.
Q: Can chain link be made private?
A: Yes. Privacy slats or windscreen screen equipment, inventory and work areas from view.
